Eczema occurs in 17 percent of most children and is especially common in African Americans. It usually turns up in infants between 2 and six months of age, most often on the cheeks, forehead, head, and backs of the hands. In teenagers, eczema frequently shows up on the skin behind the legs and elbows.

The affected areas tend to be red and bumpy with a rough, flaky texture. The problem can happen as small pinpoint bumps also, known as follicular eczema, the most common enter African Americans. In black toddlers, eczema might be complicated by very light spots that stand out against the encompassing pores and skin color. Some babies get light patches with fine white scale, a variant of eczema called pityriasis albam.

Dark areas, or hyperpigmentation, might occur after the areas heal. Eczema isn’t contagious, but it’s usually itchy. As your baby gets older, she may rub and damage your skin repeatedly, which will make the area vulnerable to infection. No one knows what causes eczema exactly, but genetics are thought to play an integral role.
